Our drivers have been delivering school supplies to classrooms across the country during our 7th annual Adopt-a-Class event.
Adopt-a-Class is an annual program in which J.B. Hunt employee drivers nominate their child’s or grandchild’s elementary school classroom for a $500 – $1,000 donation in school supplies. Drivers submit short essays explaining why their student’s classroom is most deserving. J.B. Hunt then selects the winning essays and works with the teachers to order their supplies. Supplies are wrapped in bows, and the drivers who submitted the winning essays deliver the supplies to the school in their J.B. Hunt truck.
At the program’s start in 2013, we received just 39 nominations and selected five classrooms. This year alone, we received over 300 nominations and donated $15,000 to 20 classrooms.
According to first-grade teacher Ms. Wisdom, the school supplies couldn’t have come at a better time. “As a classroom teacher, of course, we get money from our school and that goes really quickly. The kids enjoy getting new items like highlighters and new folders because, by Christmas, those items need to be replenished… so it means a lot to them.”
Throughout the years, J.B. Hunt has been honored to provide more than 100 schools with over $94,500 worth of school supplies and classroom activities.
Mr. Hawkins, a third-grade teacher in Missouri, said the Adopt-a-Class program is something his class will not soon forget. “I just want the kids to appreciate other people outside of the school building wanting to be a part of their lives,” Hawkins said. “It means a lot whenever somebody gives something, just to give, I mean that’s special.”
