Joining J.B. Hunt as an employee driver isn’t your typical onboarding experience. From the first call to paid online orientation, we have listened to feedback directly from drivers and have created a process that works for them.
Here to Listen
At J.B. Hunt, we know that every driver is unique and wants different things out of their driving job. When a recruiter speaks with a driver, they listen to the things a driver wants out of their job, including desired home time and job type. Our recruiters listen first, so they can match drivers with a job that is right for them.
When a recruiter understands what a candidate is looking for, they outline the available options for that driver. Going a step further, if the J.B. Hunt driving jobs available aren’t the right fit for a driver at the time, our dedicated recruiters make a note and call the driver back as soon as new opportunities become available in their area.
Tyler Smith, director of driver personnel, said of the recruitment process, “Prospective drivers can anticipate a seamless and customer-oriented experience. When engaging with a driver recruiter, our ultimate goal is to find the best possible fit for the applicant to start a career with J.B. Hunt.”
Here to Help
Once a recruiter has spoken to a driver and found the right opportunity for them, they introduce the driver to their onboarding specialist. The onboarding specialist is the driver’s primary contact throughout the onboarding experience. They help the driver fill out all documents, set up Direct to Work online orientation, arrange drug testing and select an onboarding date. Then a background verification specialist quickly reviews all documents to keep the process moving smoothly.
We understand drivers’ schedules are varied and unpredictable, so we have worked to make communication as easy as possible. Drivers have access to their onboarding specialist through a direct line and will always hear a familiar voice on the other side of the phone. In addition to direct lines, we have after-hour and weekend chat teams to assist drivers when recruiters are not in the office.
“Drivers are treated with a personalized experience from the beginning. They will work with a core group of people, usually no more than three, to complete the application and hiring process,” said Bobbie Lawrence, manager of driver personnel. “Drivers get to speak with actual people and not prerecorded messages or automated calls. If they have a question, they always have someone to turn to.”

Here to Watch Drivers Succeed
One of a J.B. Hunt Driver Recruiter’s goals is to place drivers in a J.B. Hunt truck driving job that improves their lives. What sets our recruiting process apart are our innovative programs like Direct to Work which allows drivers to skip the travel, long days in a classroom and, instead, get paid to do their orientation online from their home or truck. Further, our fully automated onboarding system allows drivers to get behind the wheel sooner and start working toward receiving J.B. Hunt’s benefits.
Driver Personnel Client Manager Collin New said of the program, “Direct to Work has really put our recruitment process head and shoulders above the rest of the industry. Skip the bus rides, hotel stays, and long, drawn-out orientations – Direct to Work makes the process smooth and simple for the drivers to come on board.”
Our driver recruiting team enjoys seeing drivers thrive in their new position! Bobbie Lawrence says the most rewarding part of her job is helping people. “Drivers sometimes call us with nowhere else to turn. With the variety of positions that we have to offer, we can usually find something to offer the driver. We are changing lives and that is rewarding.”
