J.B. Hunt: 2018 Year in Review

The events, milestones, and celebrations of 2018.

What a year it has been! In 2018, we celebrated our drivers, our milestones, and our legacy. Join us as we look back at the moments that have shaped this year.

Celebrating Our Employee Drivers

Drive Like a Champion

Drive like a champion. What does this mean to you? Maybe it means a driver who is always aware of his or her surroundings or a driver who completes a perfect pre-trip inspection. To us at J.B. Hunt, it’s all that and more. It is a daily commitment to safety from our truck drivers to our corporate offices and even our personal vehicles. At J.B. Hunt, we think that actions speak louder than words and that’s why we recognize those who truly represent “driving like champions.”

Million Mile

In April, we brought our champion drivers to headquarters to celebrate driving 2,3, and 4 million safe miles.

The event included great food, great company and a great awards ceremony, but most drivers agree the most memorable part of Million Mile is the Walk of Fame. Corporate employees and executives line the stairs of the corporate office to cheer, clap, high-five, and congratulate the drivers on their success. “I wish I could have hugged everyone…It was one of the best moments in my life,” Intermodal driver, Terry, said of the Walk of Fame.

Truck Driving Championship

Million Mile isn’t the only safe driving we celebrated in 2018. Twenty-nine of our talented employee drivers represented J.B. Hunt in the Arkansas Truck Driving Championship. Together these drivers brought home nine awards, and six drivers placed in their divisions, including “Rookie of the Year” and “Best Overall.”

Celebrating Our Milestones

57 Years of J.B. Hunt

Fifty-seven years ago, when Mr. Hunt started this company, a gallon of gas was only 27 cents. The world has changed exponentially since then, but one thing that hasn’t changed is J.B. Hunt’s commitment to our drivers and their families. As a truck driver himself, Mr. Hunt understood the challenges and triumphs of the job. This attitude is how Mr. and Mrs. Hunt turned a small rice hull business into one of the largest trucking companies in the country.

We want to make sure our employee drivers love where they work and know that their voice is heard. In 2018, we started Direct-to-Work, a program that allows newly hired drivers to complete orientation online at home, while getting paid.

This program means more than completing orientation quickly and avoiding a hotel stay – it means more time at home with your family. Every year we ask ourselves, “How can we make our driver’s lives better?” and online orientation is another way we hope to accomplish that goal.

Celebrating Our Legacy

We are proud of all we have accomplished this year, but we are most proud of what we were able to give back. One of the most cherished times of the year is Adopt-a-Class. J.B. Hunt drivers are encouraged to nominate their children or grandchildren’s elementary school class for a $500-$1,000 donation of school supplies.

In 2018, we had our biggest year of Adopt-a-Class yet, selecting 22 classes to receive donations. This brought total donations over the years to more than $63,000 in school supplies to 72 schools in 28 states.

Wreaths Across America

This year we were incredibly humbled and grateful to participate in Wreaths Across America for a fifth year. Through wreath-laying ceremonies, Wreaths Across America honors millions of fallen heroes across the country. Forty-two J.B. Hunt employee drivers, along with thousands of volunteers, brought these wreaths to state and national cemeteries to lay on the graves of those who sacrificed everything for their country.

Five All-Electric Trucks

Along with supporting our country’s drivers, children, and veterans, we believe it is our responsibility to create a more sustainable future for the transportation industry. This year we added five completely electric medium-duty box trucks to our private fleet. These trucks will be on the road alongside the 40 Tesla semi-electric tractors we reserved in November 2017.
